Yami Kawaii (Sick Cute)

by - February 23, 2018

This is Harajuku, a street in Tokyo Japan🇯🇵. In a country🗾 known for conformity this is where you come to stand out.
Here in Harajuku, style is defined by defying the norms but a new look is challenging one of Japan's deepest taboos:- Depression😟 and mental illness. The style is called Yami Kawaii (かわいいかわいい) it means sick cute
Can fashion break the silence that surrounds an epidemic?
What exactly is yami kawaii and what exactly does it mean?

Kuuwa. An artiste and an influencer with with 50k followers on Instagram
To find out, Connie Wang tracks Kuuwa an artiste and an influencer with more than 50k followers on instagram. "Yami Kawaii is generally pastel colors and is kind of soft and has darker elements like black or motifs such as medical themes or grotesque themes are included as well."

Kawaii is the Japanese word for cute. Fans are drawn to Yami Kawaii but honestly I don't get it!

To better understand the appeal, my friend Connie visits an artist and illustrator.

He picks a shirt with the words 'I love💕 you...I kill🔫 you' he thinks the antisocial words is what makes Yami Kawaii popular.

In Japan, there is a demand for things people are trying to avoid abroad.
To understand why people want to project this look, Connie decided to try one of the clothes👗.

She felt very uncomfortable. There's a disconnect between the type of style Yami Kawaii projects and the style she wanna see...

Japan has one of the highest suicide rates. Even talking about depression is a taboo.
Yami kawaii is a new fashion trend but could it be a coping mechanism for those suffering form depression?

Hanuyo. A former teenage model
Hanuyo, a former teenage model might have some insight. She was a finalist in the national competition until she was disqualified for discussing her suicidal past in public.  "I still feel like I want to end my life😥"
She has attempted suicide multiple times but she is now coping with post suicidal trauma.

She wants people who are thinking of committing suicide to see the consequences of a failed attempt and reconsider.

Talking about your painful experiences makes you feel better.
I really didn't expect to learn something about love💕. In United States🇺🇸 asking💬 for love is pretty hard because most of the people are antisocial but in Japan when you are struggling with self love, asking for love is something normal... it is Kawaii.

Street photography is actually my favorite. Capturing unpredictable moments is more luck than art. Here we see a man snap a pic of two...
