Kushner made the proposal at a meeting in early December at Trump Tower in New York, the Washington Post said. |
Jared Kushner and Russia’s ambassador to Washington allegedly discussed setting up a secret communications channel to cloak contacts between Moscow and Donald Trump’s White House transition team, it was reported on Friday.
Ambassador Sergei Kislyak told his superiors in Moscow that he and Kushner discussed ways to shield their pre-inauguration discussions from monitoring, the Washington Post said, citing US officials briefed on intelligence reports.
Trump’s son-in-law made the proposal at a meeting in early December at Trump Tower in New York, weeks before Trump was sworn in, according to intercepts of Russian communications that were reviewed by the US officials, the paper said.
Michael Flynn, Trump’s first national security adviser, also allegedly attended the meeting.
The report is likely to put Kushner, who is now a senior White House adviser, under heightened scrutiny in the investigations into the Trump campaign’s ties to Russia. Earlier this week it was reported that the FBI was investigating his contactswith Russian officials.
Kushner, who is married to the president’s daughter, Ivanka, has not commented on the claims but said in the past he would cooperate with any investigation. His lawyer said Kushner stood ready to talk to federal investigators and Congress about his role in Trump’s presidential campaign.
In a separate development, the Washington Post also reported that the Senate intelligence committee, which is investigating Russian interference in the 2016 presidential race, has asked Trump’s political organization to produce all documents, emails and phone records dating from his campaign’s launch in June 2015.
It would be the first time the Senate’s bipartisan investigation has made such a request to Trump’s official campaign organization.
The White House made no immediate response to requests for comment on either report. Trump is concluding his first foreign trip as president this week. He has repeatedly denied any collusion with Russia.
Two other outlets published related scoops on Friday. The first from the New York Times said that Oleg Deripaska, a Russian oligarch once close to Paul Manafort, Trump’s former campaign manager, offered to cooperate with congressional committees investigating Russian meddling in return for immunity. Lawmakers rejected his conditions, the Times reported.
And Reuters, citing seven current and former US officials, reported that Kushner had at least three contacts with Kislyak during and after the presidential campaign that were previously undisclosed. Those contacts allegedly included two phone calls between April and November 2016.
In response to the Reuters report, Kushner’s attorney, Jamie Gorelick, said Kushner did not remember any calls with Kislyak between April and November. “Mr Kushner participated in thousands of calls in this time period. He has no recollection of the calls as described. We have asked [Reuters] for the dates of such alleged calls so we may look into it and respond, but we have not received such information.”
The cascade of news showed that the multiple Russia inquiries are advancing and that leaks continue to spout from the government, giving administration officials no respite even as they trot the globe.
The White House disclosed Kushner’s meeting with Kislyak in March, four months after it happened, and played down its importance. But the Washington Post reported that the FBI now considers the encounter, plus another meeting Kushner had with a Russian banker, to be of investigative interest.
Current and former US intelligence officials were astonished that he would have requested a secret back channel, calling it “naive” or “crazy” given the FBI’s close tabs on Russian officials in the US, the Post reported.
Evan McMullin, an independent candidate in the 2016 presidential race, said the report raised the stakes for Kushner. “If true, this is treasonous activity, whether borne of malice or naïveté, or both,” he tweeted.
Maxine Waters, the Democratic congressional firebrand, expressed little surprise at the latest allegation. “Jared Kushner is under scrutiny in the FBI’s Trump-Russia investigation.

Suicide bomber spoke to his nuclear scientist mother just before he died. It had emerged that the bomber Salman Abedi who was responsible for the devastating terrorist attack on an Ariana Grande concert in Manchester in England spoke with his nuclear scientist mother on the phone shortly before he detonated the deadly device. It has been confirmed by a Libyan security source that before Abedi set off the bomb, he made a telephone call to his brother in Libya, where the family is resident, and asked for his mother. MANCHESTER BOMBER SPOKE TO HIS MOTHER JUST BEFORE ATTACK
His mother, Samia Tabbal, had been deeply worried about changes in her son over the past few years. She had expressed fears to friends and family members that he had become radicalized and even became so concerned about the threat that he posed to the public that she contacted the authorities. It is alleged by a US intelligence official that she told relevant authorities that he was potentially ‘dangerous.' It has transpired that Mrs. Tabbal has ample experience in identifying potential Islamic terrorists. For many years, Tabbal has been a close friend of the wife of a former Al Qaeda commander who was once included on the FBI’s World’s Most Wanted Terrorist listings. He has long been suspected of helping to plan the horrific bombings of the US embassies in Tanzania and Kenya which killed 224 people and left 4500 people with injuries. In a twist of fate, the former commander of the terrorist organization spent five years living in the city of Manchester where he was housed after receiving political asylum in 1995. Despite all of this, the authorities have not suggested that any suspicion has fallen on Tabbal, who has been described as an extremely talented nuclear scientist. Friends of the family have been very clear that she had no role in her son’s radicalisation or crime and that Tabbal and the rest of the family are shocked and saddened about what has happened.

Does the Full Moon Affect People's Behavior?
Many people say it does. If you go by Hollywood's offerings, every sort of mythical beast comes out to prowl and attack on the full moon, the most popular of these offerings being werewolves.
It would be a challenge to keep count of how many werewolf movies have been produced over the years.
However, there may be a bit of science fact behind all the fictional drama and horror flicks. Let's explore.
The Moon's Gravity Affects Much
While many people will pooh-pooh the notion that the moon has anything to do with human behavior, I'm not so sure.
Just ask emergency room doctors and nurses, or cops, all of whom report an upswing in incidents during the full moon.
It was none other than Sir Isaac Newton, of the falling apple fame, who worked out the law of gravity, and also, it turns out, figured out that it was the gravity of the moon responsible for creating the tides.
The moon's gravity affects us far more than that of the sun, given that it is so much closer to us.
Sir Isaac Newton
Do You Believe in Werewolves?
The moon pulls the tides of the oceans around, making them ebb and flow. Since the oceans weigh a combined total of approximately 1.5 quintillion tons, then it should come as no surprise that the pull of the moon should be able to effect our human bodies, which are puny by comparison!
After all, our bodies are, on average, about 60% water. The weight of water naturally will vary by individual, but, for example a man weighing in at 195 pounds will have a body that is approximately 117 pounds worth of water.
If the gravity of the far away moon is strong enough to influence the tides of all the waters of Earth, then we humans and other animals, by comparison, are mere ‘pushovers,’ hardly a blip on the moon’s radar.
All That Water Weighs a Lot!
- How much does all the water in the earth's oceans weigh
This link shows the calculations that were done to arrive at the figure quoted in the article.
A Real Eye-Opener
- This Is Exactly How Much Weight Humans Take Up on Earth, Compared to Other Animals - Mic
When you include their livestock and pets, it's a heck of a whole lot compared to other mammals. Note that this chart does not take into account ocean-dwelling animals.
Now, of course, when you factor in all the animals on earth, as well as other species, you come up with a lot more weight, but if you then divide out the percentage of water weight for all those beings, I’m pretty sure it would not add up to the weight of water in the oceans. I don’t know. It might. I don’t think that study has been attempted.
Planting Cycles
For centuries, the planting of crops and their harvest was tied to the lunar cycles. People believed that planting at just the right time insured a bountiful harvest, while ignoring the planting schedule could mean disaster.
There are still many parts of the world, and even some small enclaves of earth-centric groups here where such cycles are still observed and used.
Of course, there are other cycles of planting having to do with seasons, and length of summer in any given area. It's not always about the moon, but I found the website referenced above to be quite interesting concerning the moon and planting.

I'm fascinated with water and boats. I credits this interest to my seafaring friends. |
The swoosh of the tides upon the sand,
The roar of the breaking surf upon a stormy day.
The freshening breeze and salty spray
Run deep within my blood.
Seafaring men of old passed down to me
A feeling of unity, of being one with the sea.
Let me stand in the bow of a fast-speeding boat;
Let me feel the wind in my face along with the spray.
Let me feel the chatter and bounce as we roar across the tides.
Let me relish the curl of the receding wake
As we leave our cares behind.
And when we reach our chosen port, and tie up to the dock,
Let me nap in peace beneath the sun
And feel the rocking, lapping tides as they lull me off to sleep.
For I am child of the children of seafaring men
And boats and the water run deep in my blood.
So when I die, pay a golden coin
To the boatman on the Styx;
And have him ferry me for one last ride
Until I rest, rocked in the arms of the sea.
