Prioritise Education and Help Kids to Face the Future
Girls around the world are held back every day from achieving their full potential, due to barriers such as poverty, legal discrimination, and gender stereotypes. Girls like Soso, who was told “how are you going to deal with a computer? You’re a girl”. But when girls like Soso are provided with education and training — especially in digital technology — they can help lift their families and communities out of poverty and empower those around them.
But to empower girls, it is critical that they learn the basics, that education is properly funded, and that they are provided with skills that equip them for the future. Last year’s #E-skills4girls initiative prioritised women’s empowerment in the digital age and received political support at the G20. Now, we want to build on the focus on girls’ education and e-skills, with a new G20 initiative on Girls’ Education and the Future of Work.
According to the Malala Fund Full Force report, “without a specific focused effort on girls’ education and the future of work, almost one billion girls will be left behind in the new global economy.” By focusing on these key issues, G20 leaders could fill a critical gap in girls’ education. A Girls’ Education and the Future of Work initiative would promote and fund effective policies and practices on girls’ education in countries with the greatest need — preparing girls for a bright future of employment.
But we need policy-makers, the private sector, donors, civil society and other stakeholders to make this a reality by including language to support girls’ education and training in the 2018 G20 Leaders’ Statement. This statement will be finalised in just a few weeks time and the window to influence leaders on what is included in their Statement is closing — so we are running out of time to ensure that G20 leaders make the right decision.
